Sue Hale was named executive editor of The Oklahoman in January 2000, coming from her position as general manager of Connect Oklahoma, NewsOK.com, the internet version of The Oklahoman.
Prior to being named head of Connect Oklahoma in 1996, Hale was assistant managing editor at The Oklahoman since 1989.
Hale is a past president of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, a First Amendment rights group, and still serves on its board. She also has served on boards of other state journalism organizations and local non-profit civic organizations. She had channeled an interest in aging issues into a column for The Oklahoman, which she wrote for nine years.
When she was assistant managing editor of The Oklahoman, Hale helped start FOI Oklahoma, a state freedom of information group, in 1990. She also chaired the First Amendment national committee for the Association of Women in Communications. In 1994, Hale received the National Headliner Award from the association for her work on First Amendment issues.
