Chuck Tobin

Chuck Tobin is a partner in the Washington D.C. office of Holland & Knight LLP. A member of the firm's National Media Practice Group, he has appeared in state and federal courts around the country, representing the media in freedom of information, libel and privacy litigation at both the trial and appellate levels. He also regularly provides advice and pre-publication review to newsrooms.

Prior to joining Holland & Knight in 2001, Tobin was assistant general counsel at the Northern Virginia headquarters of Gannett Co., Inc., which publishes USA TODAY and owns newspapers and television stations throughout the country. Previously, he was in private practice with a Jacksonville, FL law firm and taught media law and ethics at the University of North Florida. Before law school, he was a reporter for the News-Press newspaper in Ft. Myers, FL.

Tobin, a member of the District of Columbia and Florida bars, is a past chair of the Florida Bar Media and Communications Law Committee. He serves as associate editor of the Litigation, which is the journal of the American Bar Association's Section of Litigation, is Vice-Chair of the Media and Defamation Torts Committee of the ABA's Torts and Insurance Practice Section, and is a frequently invited panelist or facilitator at the ABA Forum on Communications Law's annual conferences. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Media Law Reporter, a weekly publication of the Bureau of National Affairs that reports on court decisions and other developments in media law.

Tobin received his bachelor's degree in journalism, with high honors, in 1984 from the University of Florida College of Journalism & Communications. He received his law degree, with honors, in 1989 from the University of Florida College of Law.
